Founding Fathers by David Behrens
WISDOM of the ELDERS

w/ Links to Biographical Information
& other Quotes

"You have noticed that everything an Indian does is in a circle,Black Elk
and that is because the Power of the World always works in circles,
and everything and everything tries to be round.

In the old days all our power came to us from the sacred hoop
of the nation and so long as the hoop was unbroken the people flourished.
The flowering tree was the living center of the hoop,
and the circle of the four quarters nourished it.
The east gave peace and light, the south gave warmth,
the west gave rain and the north
with its cold and mighty wind gave strength and endurance.
This knowledge came to us from the outer world with our religion.

Everything the power of the world does is done in a circle.
The sky is round and I have heard that the earth is round
like a ball and so are all the stars.
The wind, in its greatest power, whirls.
Birds make their nests in circles, for theirs is the same religion as ours.
The sun comes forth and goes down again in a circle.
The moon does the same and both are round.
Even the seasons form a great circle in their changing
and always come back again to where they were.

The life of a man is a circle from childhood to childhood,
and so it is in everything where power moves.
Our teepees were round like the nests of birds,
and these were always set in a circle,
the nation's hoop, a nest of many nests,
where the Great Spirit meant for us to hatch our children."

Black Elk, Holy Man of the Oglala Sioux 1863-1950[2]
Chief Dan George

"If you talk to the animals they will talk with you
and you will know each other. If you do not talk to them
you will not know them and what you do not know,
you will fear. What one fears, one destroys."

"May the stars carry your sadness away,
May the flowers fill your heart with beauty,
May hope forever wipe away your tears,
And, above all, may silence make you strong."
Chief Dan George  1899–1981 of the Tsleil-Waututh Nation (both quotes)
I actually got to meet this wise grandfather once. He was the person he portrayed in the movies.
Red Jacket
"We first knew you as a feeble plant which wanted a little earth whereon to grow.
We gave it to you; and afterward, when we could have trod you under our feet,
we watered and protected you; and now you have grown to be a mighty tree,
whose top reaches the clouds, and whose branches overspread the whole land,
whilst we, who were the tall pines of the forest,
have become a feeble plant and need your protection
."
Sogoyewapha, "Red Jacket", Seneca, Chief of the Wolf Clan.
.

Chief Joseph"If the white man wants to live in peace with the Indian,
he can live in peace.... Treat all men alike. Give them all the same law.
Give them all an even chance to live and grow.
All men were made by the same Great Spirit Chief. They are all brothers.
The Earth is the mother of all people, and all people should have equal rights upon it...
Let me be a free man, free to travel, free to stop, free to work, free to trade...
free to choose my own teachers, free to follow the religion of my fathers,
free to think and talk and act for myself,
and I will obey every law, or submit to the penalty.
Heinmot Tooyalaket  -"Chief Joseph" 1840 - 1904
of the Wallowa Band of the Nez Perce
[2][3]
  Luther Standing Bear

"The American Indian
is of the soil, whether it be the region of
forests, plains, pueblos, or mesas. He fits into the landscape,
for the hand that fashioned the continent also
fashioned the man for his surroundings.
He once grew as naturally as the wild sunflowers,
he belongs just as the buffalo
belonged...."
Luther Standing Bear, Chief of the Oglala Lakota[2][3][4]

Geronimo

“I cannot think that we are useless or
God would not have created us.
There is one God looking down on us all.
We are all the children of one God.
Geronimo - Chiricahua Apache Chief and Holy Man[2]

Eagle Chief
"The sun, the darkness, the winds are all listening to what we have to say.

In the beginning of all things, wisdom and knowledge were with the animals,
for Tirawa, the One Above, did not speak directly to man. He sent certain animals
to tell men that he showed himself through the beast, and that from them,
and from the stars and the sun and moon should man learn...
All things in the world are two.
In our minds we are two, good and evil. With our eyes we see two things,
things that are fair and things that are ugly....
We have the right hand that strikes and makes for evil, and we have the left
hand full of kindness, near the heart. One foot may lead us to an evil way,
the other foot may lead us to a good. So are all things two, all two."
Eagle Chief (Letakos-Lesa) Pawnee

We must listen to Grandfather Wishi-Manitou, Grandmother Earth,
the animals, plants, stone people, priests and elders.
The Creator only acts for those who call upon him/her and then begin to help themselves.
With the Creators help, the time has come for everyone to act to save our ourselves.
Shemaqua (Big Bear) Shawnee-Cherokee

Tecumseh - Artists Rendering"We must be united
We must smoke the same pipe
We must fight each other's battles
And more than that, We must love the Great Spirit."
Tecumseh - March 1768 - Oct. 5 1813

-His appeal to other tribes to join his confederacy-
